Family Photo Dectective

by Maureen Taylor
Review written by Cindy Carman

Family Photo Detective written by Maureen Taylor, a very experienced photo analyst, is a great starter book for that photo detective within you. On Page 9 Ms Taylor says, "The purpose of this book is to assist the reader with the identification and interpretation of their family images". She then lists 4 specific ways that this book will teach the skills we need to analyze the photo clues in our archive of unidentified family pictures.

I liked the many resources Ms. Taylor recommends; for instance, books, websites, and online archives of photos. I also appreciated the blue boxed inserts which contained a summary of resources or suggestions.

She provides numerous Case Studies which were used as an illustration of the photo identification method being taught. The Case Studies were engaging, like a mystery being solved.

Ms. Taylor reminds us in each of the 12 Chapters that Internet networking and especially showing the photo to relatives is the best resource for identifying the individuals in the mystery photos in our collection.

The boxed insert on Page 146 sums up the beginning steps to take to identify the people in your mystery photos.

Even though Family Photo Detective by Maureen Taylor is designed for the beginner photo analyst, it is a solid foundation for further discovery into decipering the clues in our family photos. Now if I could just find that old box of family pictures, I could get started.
