MyTrees Online Icons

Below you will find a description of the icons used in the MyTrees Online program. If you need additional assistance, please contact our customer service department at feedback@mytrees.com

My Family Tree Toolbar

View Tree: View your pedigree chart. If you have more than one tree, you will automatically be taken to the pedigree chart for the tree which is currently selected. If no file has been selected, you will be taken to the Select Tree page, where you can choose which tree you would like to view.

Select Tree: Select a tree to view and edit. If you have more than one tree saved to your account, you will need to visit this page to open a different tree. You can also start a new tree or change the title of an existing tree from this page.
Upload Tree: Upload a GEDCOM. Use this option if you have created a family tree in another program that you wish to submit to MyTrees.com. You can upload a new GEDCOM or update an existing file. (If you upload a GEDCOM as an update, it will completely replace the existing file.) If you do not know what a GEDCOM is, or if you need instructions on how to create a GEDCOM, click here.

If you do not have a GEDCOM to upload, you can use MyTrees Online to build your family tree. Click the Select Tree icon to start a new file or to continue working on a file you have already created.

Please note that if you have created a family tree in MyTrees Online, you do not need to send us a GEDCOM of the file.

Download Tree: Download a GEDCOM of your family tree. Use this option if you wish to save a copy of your family tree on your computer. This allows you to view your file in another genealogy program, to create a backup of your file, or to share your file with others. You can download either a part of or your entire family tree. If you have more than one family tree, you may need to use the Select Tree option to open the tree you wish to download.

A GEDCOM is a simple text file of your family tree that can be created and opened by any genealogy program. Please note that if you have created a family tree in MyTrees Online, you do not need to send us a GEDCOM of the file. You are welcome to download the file for your own use, but you will not need to upload it to us.

Print Tree: Print out charts or calendars from your family tree. You can create family pedigree charts, descendancy charts, or birthday calendars. The print outs will be based on the file that is currently open. If you have more than one file, you can open a different file using the Select Tree icon.
Every Name: Run an Every Name Search on your file. This comprehensive search will take every name in your file and match them against our complete database. You will then be able to view all the results in one easy location. This option can save you hours of searching time.

This search is part of our subscription services, so you will need an active account in order to use it. You can activate your account by making a payment or by submitting a family tree that contains at least 60 individuals and 15 families (a one time offer).

Find Person: Search for an individual record included in your family tree. This option allows you to search by name or other criteria (such as birth and death dates) for a specific person listed in your file.
Find Family: Search for a family record included in your family tree. This option allows you to search by name or other criteria (such as marriage year) for a specific family listed in your file. There will be a family record listed in your file for each marriage relationship.
List People: View a list of every individual record included in your family tree. This allows you to see an alphabetical list of all the people contained in your file.
List Families: View a list of every family record included in your family tree. This allows you to see an alphabetical list of every marriage relationship contained in your file.
Append GEDCOM: Upload a GEDCOM and append it to the currently open file. Use this option if you have created a GEDCOM in another program and wish to add that information to your family tree. Once your GEDCOM has uploaded, you will be prompted to run a Match/Merge in order to connect the new information to your pedigree chart.

Appending a GEDCOM will NOT replace the existing file with the new information. It just adds to your current file. If you wish to update your entire file with a new GEDCOM, you can use the Upload Tree option.

Merge Branch: Connect a family branch into your main pedigree chart by merging duplicate records. This option will automatically locate possible duplicate records and allow you to merge them, so that you have only one record for each individual. If you have appended or created a new family line in your file, you can use this option to ensure that the new line is correctly connected to your family tree.
Merge Person: Merge duplicate records for a single individual. If you have created multiple individual records for the same person in your file, you can use this option to merge those records.
Add Family: Start a new family line that is not connected to the rest of your family tree. Use this option only when you wish to add a family that is not related to any other family already listed in your file.
Upload Pictures: Upload a picture to your family tree. You can upload photographs or images of family documents. These pictures can then be connected to a specific individual or family record in your tree.
Upload Bios: Upload an HTML document, such as a biography or other historical record. Use this option if you already have a biography or other document in HTML format. HTML is the basic language that websites are written in. You can create an HTML document from many word processing programs, such as Microsoft Word.

If you do not have an HTML document, but would still like to include a biography for an individual or family, you can do so using the History Info option in the individual or family record.

Remake Indexes: Update the indexes to include any recent changes you may have made to your tree. If you have added or changed some information, but are still seeing the old information in your file, you can use this option to update the indexes.
Public Tree: If you see this icon in the My Family Tree Toolbar, it means that your file is currently part of our public database and can be viewed by other MyTrees.com members. (Please note that information on living individuals, as well as any notes that you have marked as private, will never be displayed in our public database.) This allows other genealogists to see your research and contact you to share information.

If you have an active subscription, you can click this icon to make your file private. A private file will not be displayed in our public database. It will only be visible to yourself and anyone to whom you have given your family password. Please note that if your subscription lapses, your file will automatically revert to public status.

It will only be visible to yourself and anyone you have given your family password to. In order to make your file private, you must have an active subscription. Please note that if your subscription lapses, your file will automatically revert to public status.

If you wish to save a copy of your file on your own computer, either as a backup or to share with others, you can do so by clicking the Download Tree icon.

Restore Backup: Restore your file to the most recent backup copy. If you have previously used the "Make Backup" option to save a copy of your file, you can use this option to restore your file to that point.
