The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is list of millions of deceased people who also had a Social Security Number. The Index is limited to those whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration. Although your relative may be dead if no one reported their death to the Social Security Administration their name will not appear in the Index. Also individuals were not required to have a Social Security Number(SSN) until the late 1970's or early 1980's. The Index mostly includes deaths since 1962 although there may be some as early as 1937. The majority of the birth dates found in the SSDI are between the years 1900 to 1930. There are some birthdates as early as 1856. Remember to do a genealogy search using first name and last names only, no middle initial. The middle initial was not indexed. When doing a genealogy search for a female be sure to search using her married name. For a more detailed description of the SSDI on the MyTrees.com home page click the link 'Previous Newsletters". Then click 'Select Topic" Site FAQ's. The link to the article about the SSDI is at the bottom of the page.
