Our family history is relatively well established, historically, right up till 1759 when Hayes, Michael was born in Dublin, Ireland. He joined one of the Irish Regiments in France date unclear, changed to another regiment, La Marck again date unclear an
d traveled with his regiment throughout France and its colonies. In 1789 he met his wife in Selestat France and married her later that year in Strasbourg France. According to the records of the church where they married St. Pierre-le-Jeune, he named
as his father Hayes, Jeremiah profession gardener and as his mother Ryan, Margaret both living in Dublin. Later on, Hayes, Michael and his wife moved to Holland, shortly after the outbreak of the French Revolution. First mention of Hayes, Michael an
d his wife and one child is in the communal records of The Hague in 1793. Hayes, Michael's first son Michael Jr. died during the Napoleonic Wars in 1812 and his other son Eduard joined the Dutch Colonial Army and moved to Indonesia in 1816 where our f
amily has lived and served in the Dutch Colonial Army until 1957, when my father Hayes, William returned to The Hague. My research concerns the Irish and as yet unresearched part of our family history 1. Is there any literature available on the his
tory of Irish Regiments in France 2. How where people engaged by foreign armies - in Ireland itself, or did one take the initiative oneself and travel to France 3. Where do I start with my research in Ireland As you can see, the only thing I can
go by are the names Hayes, Jeremiah, his wife Ryan, Margaret and their son Michael, who was born in 1759. They lived in Dublin and Jeremiah was a gardner. Would this be sufficient data to start out with 4. Furthermore I would like to find out more
about the origin of the name. As far as I understand its the anglicized version of O'Hea would this be the same as O'Shea From literature I understand that the name Hayes is quite common and that there used to be seven septs who carried it. Is it
possible to tell which sept my family belonged to If anyone could help me along with these questions, I would be very greatful. Thanks in advance, drs William A. Hayes
