Research Interest: Gamaliel Haigh, my great-great-great grandfather, was born in Huddersfield to Benjamin Haigh and Hannah Gibson on 6/2/1807, baptized 4/3/1807 while they were living at Bradley, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. There is a Gamaliel Haigh but I'm not sure if h e is the same one who married Nancy Netherwood 16/5/1825 at Kirkheaton near Huddersfield and they had a child, George at Woodhouse by Huddersfield on 16/8/1829. I do know the correct Gamaliel paired with Nanny Haigh at Cowcliff about 1830 and they had 4 children, Ann 1830, Benjamin my gggfather 1832, Thomas 1834, Sarah 1836. These children were christened at St Peters, Huddersfield on 22/2/1837. Census 1841, Huddersfield, has Nanny on her own with 4 children including Ellen 2 years old, but not Sarah. She was also listed as a pauper. Gamaliel and Benjamin, both tin men, were working at Liverpool in 1851 Census The rest of the family was not with them. Benjamin married 27/1/1852 to Agnes Nimmo in Liverpool, where Benjamin, my great grandfather, was b orn on 5/8/1856. Benjamin remarried Sophia Frost in Hull, Yorkshire, 7/8/1871. Benjamin, my ggfather, married Emma Jane Hocken, on 5/6/1880, in Poplar, Middlesex. They had up to 16 children including Maud my grandmother, Elizabeth, Russell, Florence and Steve. I have no further information on Gamaliel Haigh after 1851. If I could locate his movements and where he died I might have a chance of tracing his parentage back into the 18th century. Also, it would be of great assistance if anyone had more deta il on the Benjamin Haigh- Emma Jane Hocken family.
