Researching Mary Alison, or alternative spelling, is a grandmother from my maternal line. Very few details known other than that I have inherited - eldest daughter to eldest daughter - a Kist that was reputedly made for her by her betrothed as a betrotha
l gift and several pieces of a fine bone china tea set - unmarked - hand-painted turquoise and gold leaf floral design. The initials and date carved into the front of the Kist are M A and 1739. Family legend is that she married the son of the Laird who w
as disinherited following the marriage as Mary was the village dressmaker and not considered 'a good match'. Alison may or may not have been her married name. Other surnames in this line are Noble/James, James/Foster, Foster/Sneddon and now Sneddon/Hurly
. There would appear to be a generation missing between Mary Alison and Esther Noble taking dates into consideration. The Noble and James line all known to have come from Penrith Cumberland region but also maintained that they were related to Sir Walter
Scott through Mary Alison. So far unable to find any proof of this or any proven detail relating to Mary Alison. England or Scotland.
